Is it safe to buy prescription eyeglasses online?

My frames aren’t very common (Revolution Airs) so not many eye stores carry them. My lenses are also really expensive because my eyesight is so poor. I’ve noticed that you can buy glasses online (ex. www.framesdirect.com) and usually they’re cheaper. However, is it reasonable to do this? Is there a catch I’m missing?
By the way, I know what my prescription is.
I would also plan on buying the same exact frames that I have now. About fitting the glasses to your face, a friend said that any optician can do that if you just bring the glasses to them.

Buy no prescription drugs online.

Since they cannot fit them to your face or have you try them on to see if the prescription is correct I cannot see how this would be a good idea.

Not a good idea at all to order them online, especially because you have poor vision. Measurements need to be taken after the frame is fit to your face to see where the center of your pupil is vertically so the lens is centered correctly over your eye(optical center height or “OC height”).
This is very important with higher prescriptions!
You need an optician or eye doctor to do this and you would need the exact frame for the vertical measurement. Also you need the measurement horizontally (distance between pupils or pd) this can be done without the glasses and this measurement is usually not written on the prescription.
Another issue is the fit of the frame, with a higher prescription it is important that your glasses sit on your face properly so you have optimal visual acuity and so they are nice and comfy! If you go to an optical to get your lenses and your frame fit you can always come back if your frame needs adjusting or if you have any concerns.
Please do not order them online….If anything just order the frame online and bring them to an optician for the rest. You may want to consult an optician before you order the frame, because some prescriptions do not work well in certain frames.
I would say it is not reasonable to order your glasses online!!!!
Hope that helps a bit hun!! :)

If you get your Rx from a doctor, you can get them online without a problem. I wear vintage Rx glasses all the time and have never had a problem:

My husband has really bad eyes and does it too.

yeah it is not a problem at all, they just need a copy of your rx and you pupilary distance, wich your dr can give you then put in the order and when they come in go to a optical store to get them fitted. If you bring a copy of the rx, the optician there should be able to read the lenses and make sure they are correct. I do this all the time and have had great results.

There are a few things that go into making glasses for you. There is something called a PD(pupilary distance) and OC hieght(ocular center). These determine where to line up the lenses for you and if not done properly can alter your rx. . Depending on your rx depends how much more these effect you. So my advice is to know these two measurements (it will be easy if your matching to your old frames) just ask the office that orginally fit them for you what they are. You will probably have to go into the office. Also find out what the return policy is. What are you goning to do if you can’t see properly out of them?
